The chart desk, set for twelve

The chart desk is the long lacquered table in the Yannawa room. Charts are clipped to a rail, a copper lamp sits between each pair of seats, and the only instrument required is a pencil.

What is on the table

Each seat has a cloth-bound notebook space, two pencils, and a clip for the weekly sheet above the daily sheet. The weekly sheet is always on top at the start of the evening. Students may turn it only after the weekly swing has a sentence. A smoked-glass board at the head of the table holds the shared example, which the instructor marks in chalk-white pencil so it can be wiped without touching anyone’s page.

There is no screen at the head of the room. If a student wants a live quote, they look it up after they reach home. The desk is for marks that can survive a closed market.

How a studio Tuesday moves

  1. 18:20 — the door on Sathorn Tai Road opens. Raincoats go on the stand. Tea is already on the sideboard.
  2. 18:30 — weekly sheets are clipped. Anyone who marked on the train copies the fair version, crossed-out lines included.
  3. 18:40 — the previous week’s marks are read aloud by two people, not by the whole table at once.
  4. 19:10 — the new weekly bar is discussed only as far as the two-bar test allows. An unfinished high stays unmarked.
  5. 19:40 — silent hour. Instructors walk the table and stop only for a missing neighbour or a blank margin.
  6. 20:40 — one student defends a single mark. Disagreement is spoken. The pencil stays in the owner’s hand.
  7. 21:00 — notebooks close. The shared example is wiped. The room is empty by 21:20.

What to carry

A notebook you are willing to show, two pencils, and the patience to leave a wrong mark visible. Phones stay in bags during the silent hour. Laptops stay at home or closed. If you are coming from Bang Na or Lat Phrao, leave earlier in the rainy months; the makeup hour is real, and so is the traffic.

Finding the room

The classroom is at 102/4 Sathorn Tai Rd, Yannawa, Sathorn, Bangkok 10120. The entrance is a narrow stair beside a ground-floor stationer. The academy’s name is on a small copper plate at the first landing, not on a banner. Telephone 023851137 if the stair is confusing the first time.
